Lenape Indians & Snowflakes

In Social Studies, students are learning about the Lenape Indians by reading chapter 2 in the textbook.  Today they continued reading pages from the chapter and filling in a note-taking outline.

In Writer's Workshop, students are continuing to read like writers.  Today's mentor text was Gary Paulsen's Canoe Days.  Partners read through the typed up text, highlighting any powerful words and phrases. Additionally they filled in a chart noticing how the author used punctuation to make the story more interesting.

They even added adjectives from Canoe Days to their list of Descriptive Adjectives!

In Reader's Workshop, we talked about different ways to find the meaning of different types of text in nonfiction books.

After I modeled how I find the definition to atmosphere in Weather and Climate I recorded my findings on the chart paper.  Then students took a nonfiction book from our class library and their social studies textbooks to find two more words and fill out their note-taking sheet.

Finally it was time to take down the pumpkins children had made back in October and replace them with 3D glitter snowflakes.  This was a fun craft and the snowflakes turned out beautifully.

Although cleaning up the classroom at the end of the day . . . not so much fun. ;)
