Reviewing How to Answer Open-Ended Questions

In Writer's Workshop, students have been finishing up revising and editing their stories.  Once a teacher has read through their rough draft they were given the green light to begin writing the final copy!

In Reader's Workshop students have been learning how to answer an open-ended question.  This should be a review from third grade. To get students ready to answer open-ended questions this year, I began by modeling how to do so.  They were given a reading comprehension passage, multiple choice questions, and an open-ended question to answer.  First, students read the passage to themselves and answered the multiple choice questions.  Next I reread the passage aloud and as a class we went over the multiple choice questions.  Then, students were given a sheet to keep in their binder: Steps to Answering Open-Ended Questions.   As a class we read the question highlighting key words, went through the passage highlighting the answer and text support to use in our answer, and finally wrote the two paragraph answer together.  Next week students will be completing this activity again independently.

In math students have been learning how to determine if a number sentence is true or false.
